Reflections on International Architecture Day

Every first Monday of October, in parallel with the United Nations World Habitat Day, the International Union of Architects (UIA) celebrates International Architecture Day, established in 1985.

The aim of this annual observance is to offer points of reflection that help professionals—and society as a whole—consider architecture not only as an artistic or technical expression, but as part of a broader system shaped by global urban, environmental, and social issues. The challenges our planet faces—whether natural or human-made—show that the built environment cannot be conceived solely in aesthetic terms: it must incorporate essential functions for people’s lives, such as health, safety, dignity, and well-being.

The theme chosen for 2025 is “Design for Strength”, where “strength” does not refer merely to the structural resilience of buildings, but above all to architecture’s ability to create places capable of withstanding and regenerating after crises.
It means conceiving design as an intelligent and sustainable system, able to protect communities in times of difficulty and to prevent risks through a responsible approach to the creation of the built environment.

Designing architecture is an act of love and trust in tomorrow, the result of a collective effort that brings together different disciplines—art, engineering, sociology, ecology, economics—and that becomes a universal language, because it speaks of living.
Living our tomorrow.
